Young girl rescued after 178 hours under rubble

Turkey earthquake

The recent earthquake in Turkey has caused widespread destruction and left many residents without homes or loved ones. In southern Turkey, a young girl named Miray has been rescued from the rubble of a block of flats more than a week after a devastating earthquake struck. Miray had been trapped in the ruins for a staggering 178 hours - seven-and-a-half days. Video footage shows the ecstatic response of workers who cheered and shouted "God is great" as she was finally lifted out of the darkness. Miray's survival is particularly remarkable given that rescues are becoming increasingly rare as the death toll from the earthquake passes 35,000. One of the main factors limiting the number of rescues is the length of time that the human body can survive without water, which typically ranges from a few days to a week. Other factors that impact survival rates include the amount of space the trapped person has to breathe and the severity of their injuries. According to emergency medicine specialist Prof Tony Redmond, the cold temperatures in Turkey and Syria have a double-edged effect on survival rates. While extreme cold can cause blood vessels to shrink and delay the onset of injuries, getting too cold can also be harmful. As the death toll in Turkey and neighboring Syria continues to rise, with the United Nations' humanitarian chief warning it could double, the focus is shifting from rescue to recovery. Officials are looking at ways to provide shelter, food, and healthcare to those affected by the disaster. However, questions are also being raised about whether human failings contributed to the scale of the disaster. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has acknowledged shortcomings in the response, but has also appeared to blame fate during visits to disaster zones. In the aftermath of the earthquake, officials have issued arrest warrants for 113 people in connection with the construction of buildings that collapsed, with 12 people taken into custody, including contractors. While Miray's rescue is a beacon of hope amid the devastation caused by the earthquake, it is a reminder of the fragility of human life and the importance of taking steps to prevent such disasters from occurring in the first place.
